Newton Abbot Youth Council has marked its first birthday with a vibrant celebration at The Courtenay Centre, bringing together local leaders, community partners, and the brilliant young people at the heart of its success.
Since its launch in April 2024 by Newton Abbot Community Interest Company (CIC), the Youth Council has become a powerful platform for young people to share their views, build leadership skills, and shape their town.
The event highlighted a range of Youth Council achievements — including contributions to local litter picks, designing signage for a community garden, input on the community mural and giving feedback to Teign Housing and the Life Chance Trust. These hands-on experiences reflect the group’s growing influence and the practical impact they’re making in the town.
“The creativity and commitment these young people bring is incredible,” said Alex Gurpinar, Youth Council Manager. “It’s a joy to see them grow in confidence and take ownership of the issues they care about.” Alex, alongside Youth Worker Sophie Stevens, runs the council’s weekly sessions and projects.
Special thanks went to Three Little Kiwi’s for the fantastic balloons that gave the venue its celebratory sparkle.
Looking ahead, the Youth Council is planning to host a Youth Zone at this summer’s Rotary Fayre — a space full of activities, information, and opportunities for local young people. They also plan to continue working with local organisations on various projects and activities, as well as having some fun!
The Youth Council is very grateful for the financial support that it has received from from Devon Community Foundation, Newton Abbot Town Council and Devon County Council.
The team is always open to new ideas and partnerships. Whether you're a local business, charity, school, or community group, if you have a project young people can get involved with — or an idea you'd like to share — get in touch at alex@newtonabbotcic.org.uk.
