Young People Take Pride in Their Town with Community Litter Pick

Young people from Newton Abbot Youth Council and The Station Youth Centre came together last week to take part in a community litter pick across Bakers Park and Broadlands.

The session was a great example of youth-led action through partnership and collaboration, with the young people choosing to give up their own time to help care for their local environment.

The group were surprised by the volume of litter they collected, particularly the number of discarded alcohol cans and bottles left in the parks. Despite this, their enthusiasm and teamwork shone through as they worked together to clean up the area.

One local resident paused to thank the young people for their efforts, while another even made use of one of the group’s bin bags when they found no nearby bins — a small but powerful moment that showed the community impact of their work.

Alex Gurpinar, Youth Council Manager, said:

"This was a fantastic example of young people taking real pride in where they live. They showed leadership, care and collaboration — everything we aim to support through the Youth Council."

Adam Winsor, Lead Youth Work Practitioner at Space, added:

'It was brilliant to see young people from different groups working together and taking initiative. This kind of partnership makes a real difference on the ground."

The Newton Abbot Youth Council meets every Thursday from 3:30–5:30pm at The Courtenay Centre. For more information, email youthcouncil@newtonabbotcic.org.uk or visit the Courtenay Centre website.

The Newton Abbot community is being invited to lend a helping hand as The Courtenay Centre and Newton Abbot CIC put out a call for volunteers to support their much-needed community services, including the popular Community Fridge.

The Community Fridge, located at The Courtenay Centre on Kingsteignton Road (TQ12 2QA), is open to all members of the community and is always accessible. Designed to reduce food waste and support local residents, the fridge provides free fresh produce and essential items for anyone who needs them. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own bags and only take what they need, helping to ensure there’s enough to go around.

Newton Abbot CIC welcomes donations of fresh fruit, vegetables, labelled tins, and bakery goods to keep the fridge stocked.

In addition to promoting the Community Fridge, The Courtenay Centre is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with several key projects. Volunteers are needed to help with:

  • Community fridge collections

  • Supporting the Community Café

  • Community Garden maintenance

  • Recycling and organising tasks

“We’re passionate about giving back and creating positive change,” says the team at The Courtenay Centre. “Volunteers play a vital role in helping us support the local community, and we’d love to hear from anyone who can spare a bit of time to make a difference.”

Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to speak with a member of staff at The Courtenay Centre or contact alex@newtonabbotcic.org.uk

 for more details.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved, meet new people, and help support essential community initiatives in Newton Abbot.
