The Courtenay Centre is a Community Centre located in the centre of Newton Abbot. The centre was built by Newton Abbot Centre Association, a charity. Newton Abbot CIC manage the building on behalf of Newton Abbot Centre Association. 

We offer a community space for everyone, from support and advice groups, to social clubs and dances and space for religious groups. 

There's also a variety of room to hire for meetings, parties or for local groups to meet.  All rooms have free wifi, projectors and screen.

We also have a large hall with staging, PA, and stage lighting.

We also have a Café open in our community centre serving a range of hot and cold drinks, lunches and delicious cakes.

Rooms to hire:

All our bookings are done via the online booking system. You can view room availability and see each space and its facilities below.

To book a space at The Courtenay Centre, check the online booking box just below. You can select the room you want to hire and view the availability. When you click ‘view availability’ it will display the available bookings for the room. From here you can go ahead with booking online.  Payment will be taken after we’ve received and confirmed your booking.

Please ensure you have read and are familiar with the terms of hire when making a booking. 

Prices

Standard hourly rate for:

Pink Room, Grey Room and Green Room:
£15 per hour

Partitioned Green Room, Yellow Room and Blue Room:

£10 per hour

Standard hourly rate for the main hall:£20 per hour

We offer a subsidised rate for local community groups, residents and local charities:

If 2 hours are booked, the third hour is free of charge (3 hours will then be same price as 2 hours). Please note this is only applicable when booking 2 hours or more in one session.

Facilities

Parking

There is a car park at the centre, though there are not many parking spaces. We recommend those who are unable to walk more than a short distance park here and all others can park in  the adjoining Cricketfield Car Park (also FREE after 6 pm.) which is connected to the centre car park via a short footpath. 

Kitchenette

We have a small kitchenette space with mugs, thermal flasks, jugs, cutlery, a dishwasher, microwave and kettles for those who wish to make basic refreshments. 

There is also the Courtenay Centre Café which is open Wed-Fri and can also offer refreshments for meetings and larger events.

Garden space

We also have an outdoor area with picnic benches and the first phase of a micro nursery site, where tree saplings are being grown by school children with the help of Stover Country Park. 

We have also secured some funding to develop a community garden space and plans are underway to get this up and running by Spring 2024. 

What's on at The Courtenay Centre?

There's a range of activities and groups that take place at the Courtenay Centre. You can see the timetable for information on when groups take place, and contact information for each group is at the bottom of this page. 

Slow Cooker Saturdays:

3rd Saturday of the month:
9:30am (returning 5pm to collect meal)

Join us once a month to meet up and prepare a meal to cook in a slow cooker and then take home!
Each month will be a new recipe, and it's completely free to join in.
We'll provide the slow cooker, ingredients and utensils, you just need to turn up and bring a pot to collect your cooked meal in at the end of the day.

Pre booking is essential. We'll post the link to book on here on our website each month.

Recommended donation £3 per person.

Time To Play
Courtenay Centre Playgroup:


Fridays (term-time) : 10am to 12noon
Every Friday, you can come along, parent or grandparent, to join us for play sessions. The café is open for delicious cakes and hot drinks, and there's plenty of friendly faces.
No set price to come along, just pay what you ca
n.

Newton Abbot Chess Club

Thursdays, 7pm

The club meets from late September to May, running a variety of internal competitions, enter teams in all divisions of the Torbay Chess League and also participate in the leagues of the Devon County Chess Association. We have an active junior section and encourage junior players interested in chess to come along to club nights.

Little Glow Sensory Sessions

Fridays, from 11am
Multi sensory sessions suitable from birth to pre walkers. The sensory rooms are designed to stimulate your babies senses and support with their development- the benefits are endless.

Our café

We have a café onsite offering teas, coffees, cold and soft drinks as well as delicious freshly baked cakes and light lunches, such as soup and paninis. Pop by for a snack or treat and relax in our comfortable café space.

The centre is located in the town centre of Newton Abbot, off Kingsteignton Road.

We have a car park but please be aware that there are only a limited number of spaces. The closest car park is Cricketfield Car Park, and you can walk from there to the centre via a connecting short footpath.
